Accelerating Innovation for the Intelligence Community

Our Approach

Working from an evolving strategic blueprint defining and analyzing the Intelligence Community’s critical technology needs, In-Q-Tel engages with entrepreneurs, emerging companies, researchers, and venture capitalists to find and deliver technologies that provide superior capabilities for the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC). While the technology needs of the IC are novel and complex, they also have some overlap with those challenges faced by many Fortune 500 companies, to include managing huge volumes of information, protecting data while providing access to authorized users, sharing information in real time, and remaining connected in today’s ever-changing mobile environment.

Rather than seeking single-solution custom products, IQT engages with companies that build successful technology solutions that can be sustained by the commercial market instead of by government dollars alone. Meeting the demands of the commercial market stimulates continued product development and enhancements with added value for the IC.

In partnering with our portfolio companies, IQT complements late-stage research and development programs with equity stakes. We design our investments to accelerate product development and delivery and help companies add capabilities that their IC customers need.  Additionally, IQT effectively leverages its direct investments by attracting a significant amount of private sector funds, often from top-tier Venture Capital firms, to co-invest in our portfolio companies. For every dollar that IQT invests in a company, the venture capital community has invested over eight dollars on average, helping to deliver crucial new capabilities to the IC for lower cost to the government.
